A conversation in a place...

Sometimes you run across a sign or bumper sticker or whatever that tells you a bit more about a person than you wanted to know.

I was helping move some stuff around in a shop on Saturday when I came upon a bumper sticker that said, and I quote:And I said something like, "That's...heartwarming."

"C'mon," said the guy. "You gonna tell me that's not all there is to life?" He may have been joking.

"Uh...no." Honesty kicked in. "Well...Okay, I'm a guy. I have days like that. But it isn't, you know, something I strive for philosophically."

"Hmph," said the guy, and so endeth the conversation.

Well, he is right at the basest level of existence, but that is not all there is to life. However, without those base drives, our species would have died off LONG ago.

Of course, we strive to be better than our basest nature. As long as we know what drives us, we can better plan a future that is compatible with that nature. To plan without understanding human nature is to plan to fail.

Why do democracy-based societies cycle every 200 years and socialist-based societies cycle every 75 years?

The bumper sticker is probably closer to the answer than we would like to think.
