My dear mudder is on social security. She has a conflict going on with the IRS however and they have taken to locking her bank account. Her checks are being deposited in that account. The SSA won't let her stop that process. The IRS is letting the deposit clear, then confiscating the money.
You see; when you get breast cancer along with rotary scoliosis and can't pay your income taxes because medicare doesn't cover all the needed treatments the rules that protect OJ Simpson's finances from falling into evil Jew Goldman hands fly right out the window and a little, spinally challenged old woman would be starving out in the street(because of the government theft of her "earned" retirement) were it not for her family to support her.
Oh the irony.

I'm an American; we don't have a constitution. As the above comment illustrates oh so well.
If the Repubs had a pair, and they obviously do not, they would call his bluff and let him stop the SS checks!
I collect SS, need it to live, but would welcome some spine in at least one party over this financial mess.
I'll survive. I wonder if this country will!
There's money to continue to pay SS - but some other things they don't want to give up will have to move down on the priority list.

However...it does point up the fact that SS is _not_ in a lockbox as some have stated, and payments are _not_ guaranteed - also as some have stated. So...it's a crap shoot - you paid in, and you might get double or triple out or you might get nothing. If you don't own it, it isn't yours. (and even if you own it, there could be a problem!)
