Must be a symbol. Like, "This absurd gold-plated gat symbolizes my power over you, which is actually held by all the thousands of regular guns at my command." Or something like that.
In the end, when they can no longer count on others to do their killing for them, all they can do is die. Just like regular people.

Dog, I'd be proud to be shot with them gunz, I only wish I could hear them holler fursthand! That stock work on the AK is particularly handsome, where'd they get the gold plated magazine?
When I heard my coworker comment about Khaddaffi's "gold gun", I said 'bet its a Browning Hi-Power' - yep, I was right!
Maybe the plating etc. was so extreme that the guns malfed.
I'd rather have my gold in coin and chain; easier to trade with that.

If you look at Ghaddafies pistol, you can see that it was fired a lot- or enough that the plating was wearing off.
You also can see that he hooked the trigger and pulled it into his palm.
