Seriously? This is intensely unexpected.

They're releasing Cory Maye? Balko says yes.
Circuit Court Judge Prentiss Harrell has just signed a plea agreement between Cory Maye and the state. Maye has plead guilty to a reduced charged of manslaughter, and has been resentenced to 10 years in prison, time he has already served. He’ll be sent to Rankin County for processing. He should be released and home with his family in a matter of days.
It sucks that he had to plea, but then it sucks he spent ten years in prison, too. Given how much of that was on death row, it sure could have been worse. Good news, and I hope it works out well for him.

I can't tell from researching this that he is innocent of the crime. The only thing about this is that the prosecution didn't comply with some requirements not that what they ignored would have made him innocent. It appears this guy is guilty. So what's to be happy about???

Oh, he did it. He shot and killed a cop, and never denied it. The only question was whether it was a crime under the circumstances.
