On a hot afternoon...

Napping with your head in the water bowl makes perfect sense.

Snuggling with a big, black furry creature makes...less.

Cats are neither expected nor required to make sense, they're ... cats.

For critters with a rep as aloof loners, cats are really pretty socialable*. They will snuggle up with their chosen associates. My cats would allow for weather by curling up outside the blanket when it was warm (and sleep under the blanket right up against me and each other when it was cold).

(* And people who claim they're strictly solitary hunters have never watched three cats in a circle playing with a mouse.)

A big black furred dog in the desert - oh the humanity!

That dog doesn't have his head IN the water dish at all, just his muzzle gently propped up on the edge. Now, if that were my old 120 lb lab/rottweiler, the water would be delightfully all over the floor and the dish standing empty, probably upside down.

Markus would attempt to swim in as little as a tablespoon of water, I swear! LOL Of course, he much preferred to find water in large amounts and was not the least worried if it was mostly ice.

The cat? Well, as LJH says... it's a cat. Human logic simply does not apply.

Anon - There are times in the summer when I feel kinda bad about the "big black hairy dog in the desert" thing, and he DOES suffer from too much heat. But then I remember where he was born, (Big city MUCH hotter than here) and I remind myself it was more along the lines of a rescue than a condemnation. But LB would be happier as a sled dog, I think.

ML - LB rarely encounters large bodies of standing water, of course, but his normal reaction to it is to dive in. I've occasionally thought about a wading pool. Then I think of the mess a completely wet LB can cause, and come to my senses.

Running water, such as in a flooded wash, freaks him completely out. I don't think terror is too strong a word.

For the cat I suspect that big black furry radiator is also a bodyguard for old age. Best to make friends where one can in such hostile territory.

Buck,

Oh, yeah. He's her personal monster, and she seems to know it. If I were ever threatened in LB's presence, I think he'd run and hide. I doubt a threat to Click would get the same reaction.
